ABOUT

Specialist Clinical Psychologist

Selmin İrem Koçaş graduated with honours from the Department of Psychology at Boğaziçi University. Drawn by an interest in journalism, she then worked in the media for some time. Over two years as an arts and culture producer at TRT World, she had the chance to observe human relationships and organisational dynamics in corporate life.

She completed her specialist training in clinical psychology in Italy, graduating with high honours from the University of Bergamo’s master’s programme “Clinical Psychology for Individuals, Families and Organisations”. There she came to know and compare psychotherapy practices across cultures, and began working on the psychology of migration.

MASTER’S THESIS
University of Bergamo · Clinical Psychology
“Perfectionistic self-presentation and body dysmorphic disorders: the mediating and moderating roles of social media use, social anxiety, self-monitoring and interoception, and their relationship with a tendency towards cosmetic surgery”

Clinical internship

She completed her clinical internship at the Milan Centre for Family Therapy, one of Italy’s respected therapy centres, where she focused on Systemic Family Therapy under the guidance of Prof. Pietro Barbetta. This training in family relationships, communication patterns and systemic interaction between people brings a distinct perspective to her practice.

Therapeutic approach

Her therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing on psychodynamic, systemic and expressive schools, and at times on cognitive behavioural and solution-focused techniques. She values shaping a flexible therapy process that fits each client’s own needs.

Group work

Since 2019 she has run awareness-based groups using art therapy, body and movement therapy and psychodrama. These methods go beyond the verbal side of therapy and allow a deeper, more creative kind of contact.

Migration and expat clients

She offers therapy in English as well as Turkish, and works with Turks living abroad, focusing on migration and adaptation. Her intercultural experience, and the fact that she still lives abroad herself, allow her to work with expat clients with particular sensitivity and effectiveness.

BEYOND PSYCHOTHERAPY

Alongside her work as a psychotherapist, she continues to make alternative music; artistic expression holds an important place in both her personal and professional growth. Being curious about her clients’ unique stories, and trying to understand people without putting them into shallow categories or trapping them in sticky labels, is the founding principle of her work.
